Conflict initiates determined emotions leading to distress, displeasure or improvement.
Within the workplace, it is inescapable. There is always the tendency to disagree within a given group due to different needs, perception, values, curiosities and opinions, for example, a consequential argument or debate on something relevant between colleagues, individuals or a group.
Causes of conflicts within the workplace
1. Poor communication:
Poor communication in the form of inadequate information, lack of data, misinformation, unconfirmed agreement or gossip.
2. Pride:
This is an unreasonable conceit of one’s own superiority in talents, beauty, wealth, rank etc. Culprits mostly manifest themselves in lofty airs, creating unhealthy distance from socialising with other colleagues and high contempt of others.
3. Power struggles:
This is a violent circumstances where two or more colleagues seek or strive for the same position or reward for which the other is striving for.
4. Competitive Tension:
This term describes a situation where two or more colleagues have seemingly conflicting needs or agendas but have to work collaboratively to deliver a unified product or service.
Conflict resolution in the workplace
When conflict is resolved in a healthy way, it increases understanding of others, builds trust and strengthens relationships.
It is a natural situation that should been handled properly within each agency, organization, and nation at large.
Conflict resolution is a way for two or more parties to search out a peaceful solution to any disagreement among them.
Disagreement can be personal, financial, political, or emotional.
When a dispute arises, the most effective course of action should be proper negotiation to resolve the disagreement.
The following should be the goals of such negotiation:
- To produce an answer that every party involve can conform to.
- To work as quickly as possible to search for the best solution.
- To improve, not hurt, the link between the parties in conflict with other.
Conclusion
In conclusion, conflict resolution through negotiation is good and considerate for all parties involved in any form of conflict. One thing to note is that there is higher chances for either side to gain more by participating in negotiations than they might by walking away. This makes it easier for such groups or individuals to urge resources which may preferably be out of reach.
